Finding Inspiration

Whenever we decided to bring a pet into our home, we chose to adopt. Many animals need a home and are looking for a second chance. They have been lost, given up, or abandoned. They are unwanted and helpless, and many have been neglected or abused.

After losing our old dog Max, I spent many hours researching different dog breeds and searching online through long lists of available dogs looking for a home.  I finally discovered Glen Highland Farm, a non-profit in upstate New York, devoted to rescuing and re-homing abandoned and neglected Border Collies.  I volunteered there for several months to learn more about this awesome, intelligent breed.  Eventually, we adopted two Border Collie puppies when we felt the time was right to bring them home.

Charlie was a puppy mill dog bought from a pet store by an older gentleman. Charlie and his brother spent many long days in a small apartment that was unsuited to their energy levels. Sophie was part of a large litter born in rural Tennessee and brought to a high-kill shelter, but luckily, she was saved and adopted by a couple who lived and worked in New York City. Unfortunately, Sophie spent most of each day in a crate until her owners returned from work in the evening.

Charlie and Sophie were relinquished to Glen Highland Farm when their respective owners realized they could not give them the attention they needed. We were given the opportunity to adopt them and were eager to provide them with a rich, secure environment where they could thrive.

Seeing how Charlie and Sophie blossomed in their new environment, with enough space to run and a companion to give them confidence, was the inspiration I needed to begin writing about their life on our farm.  I am so grateful to have them in my life.  Each day brings me something to smile about, and every walk is an adventure!
