What Readers Think and Why It Matters

In this blog post, I’d like to discuss the power of reviews and why they matter to new authors.  As a debut author, I’ve learned that writing a children’s book is only the first part of the journey. Once it’s published, the challenge becomes connecting with readers.

So far, I have done book readings at three libraries, participated in a book festival with other local authors, and sold my book at several holiday craft fairs. I’ve made a list of schools and bookstores, and I work through the list every day to try to book an author event or story-reading program.

Marketing a book is a marathon, not a sprint.  Each day, I do at least one thing to move forward, so hearing from readers and getting a positive review means a lot!  Authors have worked hard to get their books published and must work even harder to get them read.  That is where book reviews come in.

Visibility

In today’s crowded marketplace, reviews help books stand out.  Platforms like Amazon and Goodreads use algorithms that prioritize books with more reviews, making them more visible to potential readers. Without reviews, a new book risks fading into the background, no matter how wonderful.

Trust and Credibility

Parents and caregivers rely on reviews to choose the best books for their children.  Honest feedback reassures them that your story is worth their time and money.  A thoughtful review can also spark curiosity.

Word of Mouth

Positive reviews create a ripple effect.  A single review might encourage someone to buy the book, share it with friends, or recommend it on social media, expanding its reach beyond your immediate circle.

Encouragement for Authors

For new authors, reviews are a lifeline.  They remind us why we embarked on this creative journey—to inspire, entertain, and connect with readers.  Hearing that a book resonated with someone is the ultimate reward.

How Can You Help?

If you’ve read a new author’s book (like my debut title, “Charlie and Sophie’s Great Escape”), here’s how you can make a difference:

  • Write a Review: Share your honest thoughts on platforms like Amazon, Goodreads, or social media.
  • Spread the Word: Recommend the book to friends, teachers, or librarians.
  • Engage Online: Tag the author in your posts or comments—your words matter more than you know!

Reviews are more than just words on a screen; they’re a way to build a bridge between authors and readers. So, if you’ve read a book recently, especially one by a new author, take a moment to leave a review. It might seem like a small act, but it makes a big difference.
